SAND TRAP (2016) - for flute and bassoon

Premiere: Second Species, Rice University Composers Forum, Houston, TX, November 7th, 2016

Duration:  ca. 9 min

Program Note:

Sand Trap takes influence from the spontaneous, jagged unison lines played by bebop horn section pairings— Cannonball Adderley and Miles Davis or Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker, for example—as well as the unison rhythms played by saxophone sections in big-bands. One can imagine a mini golf ball flying in the air spinning and bouncing on the turf after a putt, only to bounce to a halt into a sand trap, then to be smacked out with and land right in the hole for a stroke well over par.
